BAD STRUTS
Struts are the main component of a modern independent
suspension system; they are what suspend the body and frame of your vehicle
above the wheels. All the weight of your vehicle rests on your struts, which
transfer the weight, via several other components. Struts need to be replaced
if any of the three components wear out. Struts are not often thought of as a
normal replacement item. Since struts are in continual use as you drive,
bearing the whole weight of your vehicle, it should not be surprising that
their components wear out over time. Struts have at least two components: a
spring and a shock absorber – and many have a third: the swivel mount. strut
failure is usually very gradual you may never notice it at all. But certainly
if you are experiencing any of the symptoms your struts are due for
replacement. Failed mounts are the easiest to recognize of the three because
they usually make the most noise. Failed mounts often cause a popping or
clicking noise while you’re turning the steering wheel, because the bearing
inside is bad. Especially if you can put the vehicle in park and the noise
remains while turning the wheel, strut mounts are your number one suspect.
Failed shock absorbers can be harder to notice. With oil-filled struts, external leaks
are easy to spot, especially if the leak is rapid. But if it is a very slow leak,
it may never be noticed, and with gas-filled struts, external leaks are not
identifiable at all. But usually struts don’t fail completely, and usually not
all at once. Shock absorber wear creeps up as the internal seals lose their
sealing capacity slowly. You won’t notice the difference from one day to the
next, but there is probably a minute daily decline in the performance of your
shock absorbers as they age. If the failure progresses to a severe stage,
drivers may notice several kinds of problems: too much “trampoline effect”,
tire noise and vibration from cupping caused by excessive up/down movement,
excessively harsh riding over bumps, or noise on every bump from too much
suspension travel. If you car is experiencing these problems, you’ve really gone
too long. New shocks and struts can make you stop up
to 10 feet sooner, while providing increased vehicle stability
and better driver control |

HEATING SYSTEM The heating system in your vehicle is designed to keep you warm; the engine cooling system of the vehicle is directly linked to the heating system. If your heating system is not working properly it is important to have it checked out, because your engine cooling system may not be working properly either and an overheated engine can result in engine damage. There are a few basic components in the heating system; blower motor, heater hoses, heater core, heater control valve, and the HVACs control panel. The cooling system components that interact with the heating system are the coolant, thermostat, radiator, and water pump. The heating system works off of the same coolant that circulates throughout your engine. It is circulated from the radiator through a series of hoses and the heater valve into the heater core. A fan then blows the hot air into the compartment. The heater core, which is located in the dashboard of your car, is really a small radiator. The heater fan blows air through the heater core and into the passenger compartment of your car. The heater core draws its hot coolant from the cylinder head and returns it to the pump -- so the heater works regardless of whether the thermostat is open or closed. Like your engines cooling system radiator, the heater core can suffer some of the same issues. If the heater core becomes clogged with rust or sludge, you will no longer have heat. Also leaks can cause a cabin full of white steam and really mess up your windows. If you smell the sweet aroma of coolant when your heater is on, chances are, you have a small leak in the heater core. Often times the heater core is buried under the dashboard, and replacing it, is a major job. Many aspects of the heater system can malfunction which require repair. An air cabin filter is used to clean impurities from the air before it enters the ventilation system, when this filter becomes plugged it can slow the airflow in which case the filter needs replacement. An engine coolant leak can develop which hinders the performance of the heater system; these leaks must be repaired before proper heater operation will return. Heater system controls are adjusted by one of two ways, either a manual system is used which is adjusted by the driver, or a climate control computer. |

CAR SUSPENSION The job of a car suspension is to maximize the friction between the tires and the road surface, to provide steering stability with good handling and to ensure the comfort of the passengers. Suspension systems serve a dual purpose — contributing to the vehicle's road holding/handling and braking for good active safety and driving pleasure, and keeping vehicle occupants comfortable and a ride quality reasonably well isolated from road noise, bumps, and vibrations. After supporting several tons of metal year after year, eventually the shocks will wear out and suspension repair will be necessary. Having a bad suspension can greatly affect your ability to control the vehicle, especially when stopping or turning, so it's in your best interest not to ignore this part of auto maintenance. How do you know when it's time for suspension repair? Here are 5 sighs to look for. Car rides rough, drifting or pulling during turns, dips or nose dives when stopping, uneven tire tread, damage oily shocks. Any four wheel vehicle needs suspension for both the front wheels and the rear suspension, but in two wheel drive vehicles these can be very different configuration. The design of front and rear suspension of a car may be different. In its most basic form, suspension consists of two basic components: Springs and shock absorbers. Springs come in three types; they are coil springs, torsion bars and leaf springs. Shock absorbers dampen the vertical motion induced by driving your car along a rough surface and so should technically be referred to by their proper name - dampers. If your car only had springs, it would boat and wallow along the road. Shock absorbers perform two functions. They absorb any larger-than-average bumps in the road so that the upward velocity of the wheel over the bump isn't transmitted to the car chassis. But secondly, they keep the suspension at as full a travel as possible for the given road conditions. |
